Metal Framework Partial Denture
This is the process of denture fabrication for our patients at our office, from the initial exam to the denture delivery appointment:
-
The patient schedules an appointment for a denture consultation.
The dentist conducts a thorough examination of the patient's oral health, including the condition of their remaining teeth and gums.
The dentist discusses the patient's dental history, concerns, and goals for denture treatment.
Treatment Planning:
4. Based on the examination findings and patient preferences, the dentist develops a treatment plan for denture fabrication.
5. The dentist discusses various denture options with the patient, including full dentures, partial dentures, materials, and aesthetics.
6. The dentist explains the process, timeline, and potential costs involved in denture fabrication.
Primary Impressions and Bite Registration:
7. The dentist takes primary impressions of the patient's mouth using alginate or silicone materials.
8. Bite registration is performed to determine the proper alignment and relationship between the upper and lower jaws.
-
Secondary impressions are taken using more accurate materials to capture the fine details of the oral tissues.
A jaw relation record is obtained to establish the correct relationship between the upper and lower jaws in centric occlusion.
Teeth Shade and Gum Shade Selection
-
1. A wax mock-up of the denture (try-in denture) is fabricated based on the impressions and jaw relation record.
2. The patient tries on the wax denture to assess the fit, esthetics, and occlusion.
3. Any necessary adjustments are made to ensure proper fit and function.
Denture Processing: (Case in Lab)
Once the wax try-in is approved, the final denture is processed using acrylic or other suitable materials.
The denture base and teeth are fabricated and bonded together to create the final prosthesis.
-
The patient returns for the final fitting appointment to receive the completed denture.
The dentist ensures that the denture fits properly, feels comfortable, and allows for normal speech and chewing function.
Any minor adjustments are made to address any areas of discomfort or instability.
Patient Education and Care Instructions:
The dentist provides the patient with instructions on how to care for and maintain their dentures.
Proper cleaning techniques, storage, and regular dental check-ups are emphasized to ensure the longevity of the denture.
-
Follow-up appointments may be scheduled to monitor the patient's adaptation to the dentures and address any issues that may arise. Typically, 1 month after delivery.
Additional adjustments or modifications may be made as needed to optimize the fit and comfort of the denture.
-
The patient is advised to schedule regular dental check-ups for oral health maintenance and denture evaluation.
Dentures may require periodic adjustments, relining, or replacement over time to accommodate changes in the mouth's anatomy or denture wear.
By following this comprehensive process, patients can receive high-quality dentures that are customized to their individual needs and provide optimal function and aesthetics.
Frequently Asked Questions:
-
Yes, it's common for dentures to require adjustments periodically. Changes in the shape of your mouth or jawbone, as well as normal wear and tear, can affect the fit of your dentures. Regular check-ups with your dentist can help ensure your dentures continue to fit properly.
-
It's generally recommended to remove your dentures before sleeping to give your gums and jawbone a chance to rest. Keeping dentures in overnight can increase the risk of oral health issues such as gum irritation and fungal infections.
-
The lifespan of dentures can vary depending on factors such as the quality of materials used and how well they are cared for. On average, dentures may last 5 to 10 years before needing to be replaced or relined.
-
If your dentures break or become damaged, contact your dentist as soon as possible for repair or replacement. Do not attempt to repair them yourself, as this could cause further damage and affect their fit.
-
Yes, there are alternatives such as dental implants or implant-supported dentures for those who prefer a more permanent solution. However, these options may not be suitable for everyone and require a more involved dental procedure.
